Cruise: 16 Feb 2015

Monte Carlo was not in the cards. The winds were too high for our ship to safely navigate into the harbor so we diverted a few miles away to the city of Nice, France. The winds and waves died down a bit by noon and we took little shuttle boats into the port.

Lunch consisted of very good authentic food, ordered for us by a very nice fellow customer from Paris: French bread with three spreads to choose from, a minced meat and onion dish, a couple of slices of French style pizza, a dish of marinated mushrooms, and a nice glass of wine.

These are a few more images of Nice, France…

Every town has at least one of these towers and it doesn’t matter if it is Italy or France or Spain. Look at the bottom of the tower for a list of those who died in the first World War. Most towns have these lists too.

No. I didn’t scare everyone away.

After walking through the streets, one beautiful street looked like the next or the last.

Then there was a walk through an antique market. Lots of old postcards, family silverware, old toys, and a lot of jewelry kept our attention until it was time to head back to the shuttle boat.

There was a huge memorial to the residents of Nice who died in the World Wars. It is different reading about the losses in a history book and reading the names of those sent to their deaths from the very town you visit. Most European towns have similar monuments.

The ride back to the ship was a bit more rough than expected and the shuttle boat kept slamming against the cruise boat landing once it was tied off. Maybe the slamming noise was enhanced because the shuttle’s hull was made out of fiberglass, but it was really loud. All I could think was that since the hull was made out of fiberglass, extra precautions should be taken to avoid cracking the hull.

Our home away from home.  The water looks much more calm than it was.
